Collecting Quimper: Our Philosophy

Quimper Pitchers: Here is a glorious array of old Quimper pitchers, starting with the mid-19th century production of useful wares. Variations in traditional forms and decors make them all worthy of careful study, and they are endlessly useful to enhance the table, the sideboard, the shelf. Singly, in pairs, in clusters - they give drama to a background of plates and platters.

HB Melon Pitcher, ca.1930. One of the lovely shapes developed by the de la Hubaudière factory in the early twentieth century, here with rare decor riche (for this form) bands, interspersed with floral sprays, and in the front, a jaunty Breton with pipe and cane. This pitcher is 8-5/8" high, sits firmly on an oval base 2-1/2" x 3-1/2", and measures 6-1/2" across the widest point to the handle to almost 4" deep, which should be fine for most shelves. It would be an excellent flower holder, and also a perfect accent for a group of decor riche plates. Signed: HB Quimper on the front, and also underneath, along with factory numbered notations. We have seen an identical piece shown in an oil painting of a French interior and have no doubt that even in its day, it was considered something more than just a useful household piece.

Porquier Beau creamer, ca. 1880. An identical one is pictured in the catalogue from the Quintin exhibit of 1998-99 on page 35. So even though this one is unsigned, we have no problem assigning it to the Porquier Beau production of this era. There is some modest roughness to the rim and an endearing waviness to the lines that border the classic yellow edging. It is 3-1/2" high, 5" from the outside of the handle to the widest point of its little fat middle. Definitely cream for one's morning coffee or afternoon tea will taste better coming from this!
