Collecting Quimper: Our Philosophy

Other French Faïence - It is fun to trace the derivative qualities from Quimper
to some of these other pieces; it is equally interesting to mark the original
contributions that these other artists and factories have brought to the genre.
Either way, the deciding factor remains the same: when it speaks to you loud and clear,
it belongs with your collection!

NEW! A lovely little vanity mirror from Desvres, standing proudly and firmly on its scrolled baroque base. Swirls of flowers and curlicues, done in the Rouen manner, combine with traditional male and female Breton folk, and the blazon of Brittany at the top, St. Malo at the bottom. The original bevelled mirror shows some typical age spotting but is in over-all fine condition (much better than the camera indicates!). It measures 7-1/2" at the widest point of the base, is 11" high, and needs a shelf width of 6" to sustain the canted back supports. Pretty detailing on both sides, as well as the back (which no one will ever see.) The mirror is held in place with a very strong canvas-like backing, under which is the signature of Formaintraux Frères, dating this to the end of the 19th century. Our restorer's mark is there, too, as we have had this piece returned to impeccable condition.

Pair of Malicorne Vases: A charming, useful pair in a very pure shape, 7-5/8" high, on a firm 3-3/4" base. These have the traditional Breton figures in a very pretty oval cartouche, from which sprays of flowers spill out and garland the sides and back of each piece. Pretty from any angle, and so useful: fresh flowers or dried flowers to play with these. Signed PBx, and our restorer's mark (which in no ways impairs their usefulness).

$575.00 the pair

Decorative Wall Plaque: Unsigned Malicorne, ca. 1880, a clear reference to the glazed terra cotta plaques of Porquier Beau of that period, but made more vivid with its polychrome decoration. 7" x 11", and pierced for hanging. The reticulation is nicely outlined, and the young girl with her dog, and pair of stockings (just knitted? just washed?) is delightfully informal.

CA Bonbonnière: An elegant fantasy piece, typical of the production from Alcide Chaumeil, ca. 1900. The coat-of-arms reads Loches, and it is decorated with all the exuberant flourishes that mark the production from this faïencerie. Some professional restoration of the various points on the base have rendered this impeccable and ready for use on your coffee table. 6-3/4" to the outside curl of the points, 2-1/2" high to the same spot.

Pair of Cows in Delft Mode: Fascinating! Cow figures with this decor have come down through several centuries and several countries and landed in several spots on French soil, these coming from Angoulême in the late 19th-century, from there to a fine collection on the main line of Philadelphia, thence to our own collection for some years. And now they can be yours! The bases are 1-3/4" by 2-3/4", and they are roughly 3" high. The cow with the red signature has had minor restoration; the one with the blue signature, amazingly, has always been fine.

$750.00 the pair

Malicorne Jardinière: Just the best example of a Malicorne use of Porquier Beau decors we have ever seen! The botanical elements are beautifully rendered: the front panel with our little Bretonne knitting, the spray of bachelor buttons bisected by a decor riche band - all speak of a rare artistic concept, perfectly executed. 8-1/4" long, 4" wide, 3-3/4" high.
