Magnificent pair of Chinoiserie-inspired Quimper ginger jars, from the HB production, ca. 1890. A handsome form, round, yet panelled octagonally. Those are classical Oriental flower sprays, birds and insects, artistically interspersed with very Celtic swirls around the base and neck. An imposing 13" high and 9" in diameter at the shoulder of the vase, they sit very solidly on a 4" octagonal base.

Smaller flower sprays and the birds and insects are on the side panels. A blue flower dominates one side of each vase, a yellow flower the other, and the lids have smaller versions to mix or match. As we show, one may set them with the same color facing out on each, or have them alternate.

They are signed HB, ca. 1890, and the three red dots, our restorer's mark, indicate minor restoration done on each jar and one lid. However, we do not touch the glaze skips and blips which are part of the original production. A rare pattern worthy of inclusion in any collection focussing on the old, the rare, the spectacular!

A single Quimper Ginger Jar, the form and bird finial instantly recognizable to lovers of old Delft garnitures. This is one of their traditional forms, here quite Quimper-ized, with the rich blues, greens, yellows setting off the young couple we have seen dancing their way across many pieces from the HB factory. An interesting contrast to the pair above: same factory, same period of time. 14-3/4" to top of bird finial, 7" across shoulder of jar. Signed HB, ca. 1890.

It is interesting to note the back of this piece, quite blank (definitely meant to stand upon a mantel!). Did the artist just go to lunch and forget about the back? We'll never know, but the speculation is amusing. Definitely a piece for front viewing. There was some modest professional restoration to this piece as well.

Quimper Potpourri Jar. A beautifully reticulated jar, delicately embellished with flowers, dots and ermine tails. The wide cuff of the jar is pierced with rounds and ovals, as is the matching lid, on a smaller scale.13" to the top of the finial, 7" across the handles, signed HB Quimper 5. Ca.1900.

The detailing is truly lovely on this piece, no matter how viewed ... we like to think of this as crammed with dried lavender, to waft into the room, and we'll be happy to tuck some from our garden into the piece, upon request.

Pair Quimper Wine Flasks. A dramatic pair, their usefulness signalled by the goats-head side decorations, dripping bunches of grapes. They are just under 15" tall to the tops of the finials, 8" across the body. Only 4" deep, they would fit many shallow shelves for display.

The coloring is very soft and artistic; the floral sprays on the back are quite fresh and unusual. There is restoration on the lids, done before we acquired them: our restorer has looked at them and felt they would be fine as they are.

Signed HB Quimper, with a line under the HB, as Camille Moreau did for the HR signature. We find this worthy of note, as when we first saw these, we felt they were reminiscent of Moreau's style. A pupil, perhaps, or, at least, a devotee? Always fun to think about!
