Collecting Quimper: Our Philosophy

NEW! More Fouillen treasures have come our way; we think you'll find the new pieces are all Paul Fouillen at his best!

Paul Fouillen: The work of Paul Fouillen in Quimper spans forty years and is a fascinating study of the evolution of an artist: from his stylized figures and borders to ever more fantastic birds, beasts and geometric patterns. We tend to prefer his earlier designs, done for the HB faïencerie, as we find in them a charmingly fresh approach to the traditional figures and scenes. While he was clearly influenced by the Art Deco and Modern Movement ideas that were changing the look of all forms of artistic endeavor at that time, his creations have their own inimitable style, the hallmark of a true artist! Herewith, a sprightly collection, focussing on his interest in the life of the people around him: sailors, farmers, musicians, each with a specifically-created border.

Starting with this glorious tea set, complete with tray!
The tray is a painting by itself, and with all the matching pieces, you have a vibrant group to enhance your shelves. We should note that this set was obviously greatly enjoyed by the previous owners and had suffered much wear in the process. So our restorer had many repairs to make, some minor, some more extensive. This was too much of a treasure not to save, but unlike our normal three red dots showing restoration on every piece, we elected to make the notation simply on the back of the tray. We cannot recommend using this to serve tea, but we can say with certainty that this was our great find of the early winter and are delighted it is now here!

The Tray
Waterfront scene by Paul Fouillen.18-3/4" across the handles, 11" deep. The coral and seaweed border, interspersed with strong cross-hatching, relates to the series of plates that were in the old museum of the faïencerie (see Our Book, p.68), while the scene itself is like a charming watercolor. Signed on the back: HB Quimper, and a painter's mark, a crosshatch. (Also our aforementioned three red dots).

The Tea Set
Those familiar Fouillen faces, that great enhancing trim, and the setting sun on the water. The panelled shape of these pieces was a traditional form of the period and lends itself well to the strong decor. Teapot: 6-1/2" from handle to spout, 6" high to top of finial on lid. Sugar Bowl: 4-1/2" across handles, 5" to top of finial. Creamer: 4" across, 3-3/4" high. All are similarly signed.

The Cups and Saucers
Panelled cups, octagonal saucers, the design and form theme carried out in every detail. Saucers are 5-1/2" square, the cups are 4" across to the handles, the base sloping in gently to sit firmly in the saucer. The saucers are signed like everything else, the cups bear two other notations.

We show the ensemble sitting on one of our antique quilts, not that this set needs any further drama!

Odetta Small Dish
In this little portrait piece, the face could be either the father or brother of the previous young man! It is interesting to look at Fouillen's faces: there can be no doubt that many of them were modelled after real people in the town. 3-3/4" diameter, signed HB Quimper Odetta, 462-1 on the back.
