| Our Philosophy of Collecting - Old Quimper! Antique Quimper! Art Deco Quimper! What do we mean by these phrases? How do they differ from each other? What should you look for when you are out searching? How do you know what you have found? All these questions come up from time to time, and we have spent many years (about thirty, at this point) answering them, and clarifying the often-confusing difference between: “Good”, “Better”, “Best” in this field of collecting. On this site, you will find many answers, not directly perhaps, but simply by careful reading of our descriptions. It is well worth checking us out from month to month, as we add recent purchases and subtract sales as they occur. The short answers to our opening questions are as follows: *Old Quimper is generally considered the production from World War I to World War II. A lot of wonderful and unusual things were created during those years. *Antique Quimper is 19th century, including the pieces from the Porquier Beau and de la Hubaudière faïenceries, the earlier Adolph Porquier and unsigned work, impossible to attribute specifically, but instantly recognizable to the advanced collector. *Art Deco Quimper is the early 20th century, highly stylized, work that came about after World War I. What you should look for is a highly personal decision: start with the piece that first attracted you to this genre, and go from there. The more you see, the more there is to learn! A collection builds from first impulses, to knowledge, to refining one’s taste, to the joy of ownership. A small reference library on the subject is most helpful (see Our Book as a good starting point). |
