Collecting Quimper: Our Philosophy



COVERED BOXES: Covered boxes for all kinds of purposes: candy, sugar, stamps, cheese, butter. Always a coup to find one with its lid, we have gathered here a fine group encompassing the charming, the utilitarian, the whimsical.

Oval, 6"x 4-1/2"x 2" high. S: HB Quimper, ca. 1935. (Ex.col:Joan Datesman). We found this a great size to keep cough drops discreetly handy! $175.

Round, 3" diameter, 2" high. S: HR Quimper, the name "Yves" charmingly inscribed on the lid, and the date inside the lid: 16 Xbre, 1921. Lucky Yves, to have started life with such a special gift, all his very own! $195.

A whimsical box by Charles Maillard, 6" x 4-1/4" x 5" high to top of leafy finial. S: HenRiot Quimper, CH.Maillard. To enhance your grouping of small figures, or grace your table for any number of reasons, this rare form is a standout for any collection. $2100.

Bonbonnière: 5" diameter at widest point, 3" high to top of pretty little finial. S: HR Quimper inside lid, and on bottom. Fanciful à la touche strokes form a delicate geometric pattern, very unusual for this kind of a piece. The coloring differs slightly from the base to the lid; however, we are quite sure this is the original top and bottom (could easily not have been painted or fired at the same time). $225.

Little covered pot: 4" diameter, 5-1/2" across handles, 3" high to top of looped finial. S: HB Quimper. A fresh take on the basket-of-flowers motif, in lively (ca.1950) colors. Nice to keep on a desk for paper clips, etc. (Ex.col: Joan Datesman) $110.

Cheese box, 5" diameter, 2 " high, created for, and signed, inside both pieces: Au Negre-Royan. Which side is up? Take your pick! To use for cheese, or nicely display, this is a rare gem, wittily designed. (Ex.col: Joan Datesman) $300.

Tiny heart-shaped box: 2"x 2" x 1", unsigned. On the cover, the ermine sits under three ermine tails, under a crown, and under him it says "Chambord". Perfect for a special bit of jewelry. (Ex.col: Joan Datesman) $95.

Large box: 8" x 5" x 2-3/4" high. S: HB Quimper. A lovely old form, in lovely soft colors. Traditional figures are framed by delicate sprays of mistletoe. A handsome size, ready for your ... note paper, handkerchiefs, old love letters ... you decide! There is some minor glaze rubbing on lid and around rim, original to the piece. $500.

Mustard pot: 5" x 2" x 3-1/2" to top of finial. S: HENRIOT Quimper, C. Maillard. This is a mini-marvel and has always been a piece much sought-after by collectors ... one is pictured in our book, "Collecting Quimper", on p. 50, upper left-hand, and so tiny it is hard to discern, but it is there. The underside of the lid had a modest restoration, and the very tops of the ladies' coiffes were also brought back to perfection. Can certainly be used on your table (just handwash the lid) or put with other small and charming pieces. $975.

Butter tub: 6-1/2" diameter on the attached base, 3-1/2" high to top of lid. S: HB Quimper on base and top of lid. A rare and handsome border design, just right for this versatile dish. Butter, yes, but also confiture, or crème fraîche, or the sauce of your choice. $650.

Small box, 4" x 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" to top of her coiffe. S: HB Quimper. A perfect little Bigoudène perches neatly on the lid of this useful little box. (Ex.col: Joan Datesman).We have seen many pieces of this genre, but never another box. And now she can be yours to enjoy, on a shelf, on a table, on a desk. $175.
