Porquier-Beau! The original mirror with bevelled edge, beautifully framed in the distinctive Porquier-Beau style: handsome blue decor riche border, with the blazons of Brittany, top, and Quimper, bottom, and on each side, a colorful rendering of traditional Breton poses and costumes of the period. This piece is totally original and very heavy, to be expected, considering its handsome size: 15-1/2" x 18 -1/2". The last owners had it backed and readied for hanging...and it is now ready for you to do the same. (Despite which, we'd prefer to see its considerable weight supported by a simple decorative ledge). There is some slight discoloring of the mirror itself, not surprising, given its venerable age.

A pair of AP frames. How very dear, this little pair of frames, ca. 1880. Their unusual small size, rustic appearance, and great age, made it imperative that we save them and have them restored; in this case, that included new back supports, as well as restoration on each frame. Well worth it - they are now in perfect condition! They measure 3-7/8" x 5-1/4".

A charming Desvres mirror, with lots of exuberant flourishes: baroque scrolls top and bottom, Rouen-type detail on the frame itself, nicely-done Breton figures on each side, and, as if the painter just couldn't stop, floral sprays all over the back as well. The brown canvas scrim may have been added at a later date, but the mirror is probably original, since it is nicely bevelled and slightly age-spotted. 7-1/2" across the base, 11" high, and needs a shelf depth of 5-1/2" to stand properly. Has had minor restoration.

Desvres Mirror frame. A wonderful study piece with the Porquier-Beau frame above! Seeing the two together is an easy way to note how closely the one factory copied the other! Here is the identical mold, small-size: 8 3/4"x 11", and the decor follows the Porquier-Beau pattern closely. This mirror is long gone, but it would be worth replacing with a nice bevelled glass, like the other examples here.
