Quimper plates from de la Hubaudière, this group from the 1870s to 1910. It was a time of great artistic expression for this factory, the beginning of the depiction of the Breton peasants in all their infinite variety of costumes and daily occupations. Many different borders and motifs were used, and we constantly search for the unusual ones to bring to you, and are happy to present here a good sampling of this period.

HB Plate, ca.1870: With fine painting, this exquisite costume plate was clearly part of a series done for regional distribution. The pose and the details of her dress and coiffe are quite remarkable, and she could well hang on the wall as a small painting, with that lovely ribbon border interlaced with fleur-de-lys. She is 9-1/2" in diameter and signed on the back with the HB mark of the 1870s. One could go on and on about the details of her dress, but, as demure as she looks, we think she speaks quite well for herself! Made for the Morbihan area, and so signed on the front.$1350.00 |

Pair of HB Plates, ca. 1870. A matching pair to the lady above, and, indeed, from the same household. All the vital statistics are the same: 9-1/2" diameter, early de la Hubaudière signature, this time xHB (also used at that period), but study the differences! The fleur-de-lys all face in and not out, and the ribbon border on this pair is overlaid with the Breton ermine tails. And the border colors are reversed, one to the other, which gives them an added piquancy. "Douarnenez" is signed under the lady in the body of the plate. "Pleyben" is signed in the border of the gentleman. And please note that he has a couple of glaze smudges in the upper left-hand border which are inherent in the manufacture and in no way detract from his charming insouciance.$1600.00 the pair | |

HB Plate, ca.1885. The winged pig, a fabulous creature also depicted by the Porquier Beau faiëncerie, is particularly impressive on this slightly-smaller-than-usual plate. The diameter is 8-1/8", and the red chain border is refreshingly simple, making it easy to mix this little charmer with many other motifs of Quimper.$475.00 |
Please note the three red dots, our restorer's mark, as well as the HB signature of the late 19th century. |
We quite favor these smaller plates, as we find that the central motifs really stand out in the smaller space surrounding them. |

Pair of HB Plates. Classical late 19th-century Quimper plates from the de la Hubaudière factory. Traditional costumes, well-executed, traditional border, and traditional form of the plates themselves! No signature, but no doubt, either, that these are HB, from the last quarter of the 19th century. The lady says Pont-Aven on the front, the gentleman says Rosporden. You can discern that the glaze has a slightly bluer cast on the gentleman, than on the lady? No doubt they were produced on two different days. Interesting to contrast these in style, borders, (and certainly, price!) to the ones described above with the ribbon-y borders. These are of lovely quality, we just made a very lucky buy:$495.00 the pair. |

Pair HB Plates. This handsome pair was done right after the turn of the century, using figures and elements we have come to know. The distinction to this pair is the swirling two-tone blue border (please note they are not identical). A little artistic license and lots of artistic freedom add to the charm and have a great deal to do with the fascination this pottery holds for us. They are 9" in diameter, and the fact that they are both facing the same way makes one wonder if one of the poncifs, the outline stencils used for the figures, got reversed. If you compare her pose with the lady who is spinning in the unsigned pair, you will see that the earlier lady faces the other way. Always makes for intriguing speculation. Signed HB Quimper on the front. Plain back shows old blobby glaze, and pontil marks.$1200.00 the pair |
